Florida airports among worst for delays, including Jacksonville (Courtesy of the Jacksonville Business Journal) — Florida airports are among the worst in the country for delays so far this year, with Jacksonville International Airport coming in at No. 8 with 26.3%.
That’s according to data compiled by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics and interpreted by researchers at the travel insurance firm InsureMyTrip, looking at the top 75 busiest airports between January and July.
San Juan Airport-Luis Muñoz Marín International had delays 33.9% of the time to lead all airports, followed by Orlando International at 30%. Palm Beach International, No. 4 on the list, had 29.6% of flights delayed, with No. 5 Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International coming in just below that with 29.5%. Tampa International, No. 6, had 26.9% of flights delayed.
For a lot of folks, a delay is better than a cancellation, though, and Jacksonville is No. 38 this year in cancellations, at 1.49%. Fort Lauderdale was the only Florida airport in the top 10 in cancellations, at 2.47%. New York and New Jersey airports — Newark (3.78%), LaGuardia (3.32%), JFK (2.91%) and Buffalo (2.52%) led the cancellation list.
Last year, Jacksonville had a cancellation rate of 1.98% and around 18% of departures were more than 15 minutes late.
Minneapolis-St. Paul International led the airports with the lowest percentage of flight delays, with 16.5%, with Seattle-Tacoma International at 17.6%, and Salt Lake City International at 17.9%. There were no Florida airports in the top 10 of fewest delays.
