New apprenticeship to provide Savannah Tech students with careers at Hyundai megasite (Courtesy of WTOC Channel 11) — Savannah Technical college has partnered with the Hyundai megasite to give apprenticeships to students to help their careers. The first batch of apprentices signed today at the megasite’s training facility.

For Savannah Tech students, hands-on experience is everything.

“Being able to apply what I’m learning in school the day after I’ve actually had the school training and being able to apply that to a job has been amazing for me,” said Savannah Tech student Lee Harris.

This helps to give students a career leg-up on their peers.

“They’ll have really three years worth of experience,” said Savannah Tech VP of Economic Development Tal Loos. “They’ve done their year and a half of school and year and a half of training all at the same time.”

The students who signed are based in the coastal empire.

A couple have family members who currently work at the megasite. That includes Christopher Russell, whose mom was the inspiration behind his career choice.

“She recommended this job, I gave it a chance and I’ve never regretted it since,” said Russell.

The Hyundai megasite says it’s using this opportunity to gain young trade workers with experience.

Chief Administrative Officer Brent Stubbs says that’s getting harder to find.

“This new apprenticeship helps us meet a critical shortage of maintenance skills throughout the United States,” said Stubbs. “We want to build the future talent we need.”

Apprentices will train three days a week at the megasite, and spend two days in class until they receive their Industrial Maintenance diploma. Afterwards, they’ll be brought on full-time to work for Hyundai.
