American In-Home Care is a senior care referral service in Northeast Florida – matching families with independent care providers for companion care, personal care, respite and specialized dementia support.

The company was originally founded in 1992 – and American In-Home Care Area Recruiter Maricel Silsbee explains that their main focus is coordinating a private duty nurse registry to provide services wherever their clients may live.

“Whether it’s a home or apartment residence where they live by themselves or with a family or spouse, all the way to facilities, rehabilitation centers, or hospitals, we’ll provide in-home services wherever the client needs it,” she said. “However, the majority of the time clients are provided services in a residential setting, along with retirement communities and places like that, not in healthcare facilities.”

Silsbee, who has been with the company for nearly 11 years, says she’s been impressed with services provided by CareerSource Northeast Florida in reaching healthcare provider candidates for the company.

“I’ve been working hand in hand with the organization for many years now, way before the COVID Pandemic,” Silsbee said. “We did lose touch in 2020, but I reengaged with CareerSource when it was involved in the spring job fair at Florida State College at downtown Jacksonville a couple of years ago.”

Since that time, Silsbee has been active at the Gateway Career Center on Norwood Avenue.

“Wanda Grant (business specialist), Janet Upton (veteran services representative) and Karen Mingo (jobs and benefits supervisor) at Gateway are wonderful…so helpful and very kind,” she said. “The entire staff there is great.”

Silsbee added that Carol Cullen, CareerSource NEFL’s Industry Manager for Health Care, has also been instrumental in helping her stay involved with the organization – and is assisting her in branching out to job fairs at the centers in St. Johns and Clay counties, which are part of Silsbee’s market for the company.

Beyond those who work directly with her on the hiring events, Silsbee is impressed with the level of service provided to job seekers.

“I love that the staff are very hands-on in helping individuals get to where they need to be…providing them with resume help, assistance on the computers or any other needs job seekers have,” she said. “I just think it’s great that they have the resources to help these individuals so they can become successful, no matter where they are in their career path.”

Because American In-Home Care is a referral service, Silsbee says the company doesn’t train or manage any candidates they identify.

“The care provider, or candidate in our case, comes in with full credentials…whether they are a certified nurse assistant (CNA), licensed practical nurse (LPN) or a registered nurse (RN),” she said. “We refer their services based on their preferences and availability. In addition to their credentials, we definitely look for someone who’s very attentive and focused on the client’s needs.”

Silsbee says that if a candidate is not qualified but is interested in entering the healthcare field, she can also provide resources and direct them to where they can become certified through the state.
