Amazon to hire thousands of holiday season workers in Jacksonville (Courtesy of the Jacksonville Business Journal) — Seattle-based Amazon.com Inc. is seeking thousands of job candidates throughout Florida to help it “deliver great holiday experiences.”

The global e-commerce company announced Tuesday it has 16,000 full-time, seasonal and part-time roles available across its Sunshine State operations, and about 4,000 of those will be in the Jacksonville area.

The First Coast will see the largest concentration of new employees in Florida, the e-commerce giant said: Hiring in other markets in teh state includes 2,500 employees in Tampa, 3,000 employees in South Florida and 1,000 employees in Orlando.

Seasonal employees have an opportunity to transition to full-time positions, according to a news release.

The company plans to hire 250,000 employees across the U.S. this winter, a 67% increase from last year.

“Whether someone is looking for a short-term way to make extra money or is hoping to take their first step toward a fulfilling and rewarding career at Amazon, there’s a role available for them,” Amazon Senior Vice President of Worldwide Operations John Felton said in a prepared statement. “A fulfillment or transportation employee who starts with us today will see a 13% increase in pay over the next three years — likely more, including our annual wage investments — and that’s on top of offerings like pre-paid college tuition with career choice and health care benefits on day one.”

Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) needs to fill positions in stowing, picking, packing, sorting and shipping customer orders, which have pay ranging from $17 to $28 per hour depending on position and location. Benefits include career advancement opportunities; health, vision and dental insurance; 401(k) with company match; up to 20 weeks of paid pregnancy/parental leave for birth parents and more.

Average pay for customer fulfillment and transportation positions will be $20.50 per hour.

Since 2010, the company has invested over $28 billion in Florida — including infrastructure and employee compensation — and has created more than 49,000 direct jobs statewide, according to Amazon’s 2023 Economic Impact Report provided by Keystone Strategy. The company supports another 65,000 indirect jobs statewide in fields like construction and professional services.

Other retailers are also beginning to ramp up holiday hiring. For example, Minneapolis-based Target Corp. (NYSE: TGT) announced it plans to add 100,000 seasonal workers nationwide. Macy’s Inc. on Monday said it would add more than 38,000 full- and part-time seasonal employees at its Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury stores across the country.
