Crowley receives $2.3 billion government contract (Courtesy of the Jacksonville Business Journal) — Crowley has had one of the largest transportation contracts issued by the federal government renewed for seven years, with the Jacksonville-based company earning $2.3 billion over the course of the job.

The contract from the U.S. Transportation Command is to provide transportation and logistics services for the U.S. military under the Defense Freight Transportation Services program, according to a news release.

The services under the contract include all forms of surface transportation throughout the continental U.S., Alaska and Canada, including less-than-truckload, full truckload, expedited, time definite and rail services as well as cross-docking and warehousing.

“There is no greater honor than to serve the logistics needs of our nation’s military service members with the trust of the U.S. Department of Defense,” Crowley Chief Operating Officer Ray Fitzgerald said in a statement. “The lasting partnership built with USTRANSCOM is a privilege that the people at Crowley never take lightly as we ensure an efficient and effective supply chain for the military and other agencies’ needs.”

In 2017, Crowley was awarded the Defense Freight Transportation Services contract following a series of protests and legal challenges.

The job has helped the company grow its transportation operation: Crowley’s network of carriers and suppliers grew by over 500% over the past seven years, the company said.

Earlier this year, Crowley was one of three companies in Jacksonville — and 26 more around the world — that was selected for a contract to provide logistics services for the U.S. military outside the U.S.

That $710 million contract, which began in June, involves providing commercial port operations and related transportation services in locations outside the continental U.S.

Crowley was the First Coast’s top recipient of money spent by the Department of Defense between June 2023 and May 2024, according to the most recent data available. Combined, the different units of Crowley that worked on DoD contracts during that period had $305.36 million dollars obligated by the government based on contracts previously won.

All told, the almost 200 defense contractors on the First Coast had $829.88 million obligated over that period. The bulk of that money — $438.82 million — came from the Navy, with the largest amount spent on transportation-related jobs.
