Epic Theatres to reopen 16-screen St. Augustine location featuring IMAX with Laser (Courtesy of the Jacksonville Business Journal) — Epic Theatres is reopening its renovated St. Augustine theater soon. And an IMAX with Laser screen will be opening with it.

The 16-screen Epic Theatres of St. Augustine will feature custom stadium recliners, a 12-channel sound system and next gen 4K laser projection — a new optical engine, which delivers increased resolution, sharper and brighter images, deeper contrast, and “the most distinct, exotic colors ever available on-screen,” according to a press release.

This follows an industry trend to more upscale seating with many newer establishments, like the Cinemark Durbin Park that opened in 2020, sporting lounger-style seats. According to a permit issued by St. Johns County, Epic Theatres spent about $1.3 million to put in new seats. And Y.M. Cinema Magazine estimates a comprehensive IMAX with Laser to cost between $400,000 and $1 million.

With the multimillion-dollar investment, Epic aspires to offer moviegoers a cutting-edge viewing experience that demands “an unmatched level of immersion.”

“We’d like to provide our customers with experience they can relish in, one that creates an additional reason to step out of the comfort of their living rooms and into the cinematic ambiance of an unforgettable experience,” Epic Theatres marketing manager Gabrielle Ronda told the Business Journal.

Scheduled for completion by the end of November, a mid-December grand opening ceremony is scheduled.

Family-owned for over seven decades and based in DeLand, Epic operates 12 movie theaters in Florida and North Carolina.
