Florida Rock Industries plans rail yard in Green Cove Springs (Courtesy of the Jacksonville Business Journal) — A new distribution center for Florida Rock Industries Inc. may soon be on its way to Green Cove Springs.

The company, owned by Vulcan Materials, applied for an environmental resource permit with the St. Johns River Water Management District to use land off County Road 209 South and Bayard Road.

Florida Rock Industries’ main business is in construction materials, concrete products, and cement and calcium products.

Records show development is planned for a rock and sand distribution center with added rail lines and a stormwater detention facility south of Green Cove Springs.

The proposed project is set to be on a 31-acre site served by a CSX rail line. The site is currently vacant and owned by Florida Rock Industries, according to Clay County Property Appraiser records.

In Jacksonville, Vulcan Materials has had a presence just north of the Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, leasing a building at 155 E. 21st Street.

Vulcan Materials acquired Florida Rock Industries in a cash-and-stock deal worth $4.2 billion in 2007.

The company was previously owned by Jacksonville-based Patriot Transportation Holding Inc.
