Groundbreaking planned for concourse expansion at Jacksonville International (Courtesy of the Jacksonville Business Journal) — After a months-long delay, airport officials plan to broke ground on Concourse B at Jacksonville International Airport in May, said Greg Willis, a spokesperson for the Jacksonville Aviation Authority.
The groundbreaking is more of a ceremonial event. Construction on the concourse is expected to begin in summer as remaining assessments for the project to begin are close to completion, Willis said.
The new concourse has an estimated $200 million price tag. The six-gate expansion will add 118,000 square feet on the airport’s second level, with a 20,000-square-foot mezzanine, city records show.
The upgraded building is set to be three stories high and can hold up to 12,279 people, according to the records.
The project joins a slew of expansion planned at the airport, including more concessions, restrooms, holding rooms and airport ground-loading locations. Construction was scheduled to begin in September of last year, but a series of federal environmental assessments pushed the project’s start date back to 2024.
Other projects in progress at the airport are the expansion of a Chili’s to increase its seating by 50% and add a renovated kitchen and dining area, along with a new pre-order and takeout area.
