Palatka plans new jet hangar, city reviews Jax airport taxiway extension (Courtesy of the Jacksonville Business Journal) — Construction of a corporate jet center is in its early phases at Palatka Municipal Airport, according to state records.
Meanwhile, the Jacksonville Aviation Authority is seeking city approval to begin construction on a taxiway extension and rehabilitation at Jacksonville International Airport.
These are some of the latest aviation projects in development around Northeast Florida.
Palatka hangar work
The City of Palatka plans to build a new Corporate Jet Center and apron at the Palatka Municipal Airport, according to state records.
Palatka leaders are seeking a modification to their existing environmental permit with the state to receive approval for the addition of the hangar and airplane parking area, according to an application submitted to the St. Johns River Water Management District on July 9.
Passero Associates is serving as the engineer for the project, the records show.
According to bid paperwork posted on Passero’s website, the firm bid for the first phase of the Corporate Jet Center and apron project in March.
The metal aircraft hangar was planned to be 11,995 square feet with 100-foot wide and 28-foot tall 6-leaf sliding doors, with a restroom inside, per the bid document.
The Passero documents showed the lowest estimated cost of the project was around $2.3 million.
Additionally, the work includes a 1,600-square-foot pre-engineered metal building office with restrooms and associated asphalt pavement parking stalls and concrete sidewalk. North
The asphalt aircraft parking apron is set to be 19,640 square feet.
Improvements slated for the site include an asphalt pavement access road, concrete sidewalk, fencing & gates, storm sewer and utilities.
JIA Taxiway under review
A project to extend and rehabilitate a taxiway at Jacksonville International Airport is under review by the city, records show.
Jacksonville Aviation Authority officials submitted a permit application for the Taxiway F extension project Tuesday.
The work has a hefty price tag at nearly $10.9 million, per city records.
But JAA aims to spur future development with the project, recognizing a need for more general aviation space in Jacksonville.
The extended taxiway is expected to open the door to future hangars for maintenance, repair and overhaul, along with other aviation-related companies, the Business Journal reported in 2024.
