Superior Construction earns contract to revamp Arlington Expressway (Courtesy of the Jacksonville Business Journal) — Jacksonville-based Superior Construction has been awarded a $26 million contract by the Florida Department of Transportation to upgrade and revamp a section of State Road 115/Arlington Expressway.
The contract includes safety enhancements, structural improvements and resurfacing of a 7-mile section of S.R. 115 and adjacent surface roads from the Mathews Bridge to the Southside Connector.
The project is expected to take 450 days and will be completed in multiple phases, with construction starting in spring. The estimated completion date is summer of 2024.
“Superior has successfully completed similar projects in this area. As always, our crews will work collaboratively with FDOT to minimize impacts to pedestrian and commuter safety,” said Brian McGarity, Superior’s Northeast Florida Division manager, in a release.
FDOT previously identified infrastructure concerns in the area, which Superior plans to address before beginning work, in order to prevent future degradation of the roadway. This will include replacing bridge drain piping at the University Boulevard overpass and rehabilitating the service road bridge structure.
The heavy civil contractor will replace and rehabilitate the existing drainage system, provide new shoulder treatments and safety enhancements such as replacing the sidewalk, guardrails, signalization and signing, and add improved lighting to meet ADA compliance.
