Tech job salaries on the rise in the South, including Florida (Courtesy of the Jacksonville Business Journal) — Technology industry employees in Florida are earning higher salaries than ever, according to a recent report from Dice, a career site for tech industry.
The average tech salary in the state reached $116,939 last year, surpassing the national average of $112,521. Compensation in Florida was up 12.1% year-over year, making it the only state to achieve double-digit growth.
“Florida has worked hard to attract tech professionals and investment from across the country, which could help power this demand,” the report said.
The Sunshine State ranks fifth for technology industry pay in the U.S., according to the report. It follows New York ($121,246), California ($120,942), Georgia ($120,768) and Virginia ($117,073).
As expected, the Silicon Valley area had the highest salaries at an average of $131,332, even though pay actually declined by about 7% compared to the year before.
Dice compiled its report information after analyzing nearly 3,000 surveys completed between August 30 and Nov. 4, 2004. It also used job posting data from Lightcast, a company that collects labor market data. The report looks at how tech professionals feel about their overall compensation and analyzes the industry’s best-paying jobs and skills.
Why Florida tech salaries are on the rise
Florida’s salary growth appears to be part of a larger trend.
The South experienced the biggest pay increases at 4.4%, while both the Midwest and Northeast experienced slight declines. Many businesses, including tech companies, have relocated to Sun Belt states in recent years for lower taxes and a business-friendly regulatory environments.
Although tech workers in the Midwest tend to earn the lowest salary, the report notes they have a cost of living advantage compared to the coasts.
Manufacturing was a standout sector for compensation last year. Salaries for tech jobs in that sector were up 15% to a national average of $119,282.
“This is not surprising considering the industry’s need for automation, computer vision, and other cutting-edge technologies as part of a broader digital transformation,” the report said.
It’s another trend that could help explain Florida’s rise in the rankings. According to Florida Commerce, manufacturing is among the fastest-growing industries in the state and employs more than 100,000 people.
Meanwhile, traditionally strong sectors for tech salaries – consulting, software, and banking/finance – all had average salaries exceeding $125,000, also higher than the overall average.
Some skills pay more than others
The data shows it pays to have artificial intelligence skills.
Tech professionals responsible for artificial intelligence development earn 17.7% more than their peers not involved in AI work. However, Dice notes that professionals working on AI projects tend to hold more senior positions in management and executive roles, which helps explain the salary advantage.
According to the report, tech professionals could earn a $10,000 pay bump if they gain expertise in skills such as AI, cloud computing, cyber security, DevOps and software as a service.
While tech professionals are among the best paid in the country, the report found that 59% of industry employees feel underpaid. It comes as more companies reduce employee benefits, including everything from health insurance to professional development opportunities.
“We’re seeing a clear disconnect between what tech professionals value and what they’re receiving from employers,” said Art Zeile, CEO of DHI Group, Inc., parent company of Dice. “Organizations that can bridge this gap, particularly in areas like remote work flexibility and professional development, will have a significant advantage in attracting top talent in 2025.”
