Surgical robotics company MMI raises $110 million (Courtesy of the Jacksonville Daily Record) — Medical Microinstruments Inc. said Feb. 21 it raised $110 million in additional funding, bringing the total investment in the company founded in 2015 to about $220 million.

MMI, which has its North American headquarters in Jacksonville, said the investment supports commercialization of its robotic microsurgery system. The company said the system allows surgeons to replicate the natural movements of the human hand at the micro scale.

“Our Symani Surgical System is uniquely positioned to expand patient access to care by accelerating the number of surgeons able to perform complex, delicate procedures,” CEO Mark Toland said in a news release.

“With the support of our investors, we will continue to advance our technology through a growing body of clinical evidence and expanded hospital partnerships.”

Fidelity Management & Research Co. led the latest funding round. 

According to MMI’s website, the company previously raised $24 million in its initial phase and raised another $87 million in 2022 from several investors.

MMI was founded in Pisa, Italy, which is listed as its European headquarters on the company’s website.

The website lists MMI’s office at 5022 Gate Parkway in Jacksonville as its North American headquarters.

The city issued a permit in September for Dav-Lin to renovate 17,606 square feet of space in Building 500 at 5022 Gate Parkway for MMI’s facility.
